Is it normal to feel so attached to a TV show?

The Allure of TV Shows Janet Pribanic

If you’re a pop culture geek who loves binge-watching TV shows, you've likely gone through a rollercoaster of emotions with the characters to the point that some might think you’re exaggerating. After watching the shows for a long period, you begin to form a bond with these fictional characters. Sometimes, we can relate to these people better than our real-life friends. Janet Pribanic.

According to this study, there's nothing wrong about crying over TV shows. In fact, it's healthy. Aside from the catharsis we experience, it can also make us go through a wide range of emotions that we might not necessarily feel in real life. In a way, being invested in a story can also help us navigate what happens in our own world. While it is completely normal to feel enraged after an episode of Game of Thrones or cry buckets of tears after binge-watching This is Us, it is also possible to get overly attached to the story. Janet Pribanic

Experts in psychology explain that when the shows you watch begin to interfere with your mood and productivity for long periods, it might no longer be healthy. Make sure to remind yourself that what you see is fiction and that what happens outside the screen merits more of your attention. Janet Pribanic.

In reality, our relationship with our favorite characters is one-sided. For those who might be feeling too affected by their favorite programs, perhaps taking a break or watching a different show might help you detach. At the end of the day, we really can't do anything to the stories we are watching. But there's a lot we can do to improve the lives we are living. Janet Pribanic

The five don’ts of public relations

PR looks overwhelmingly easy to do: put out a press release, socialize with influencers, and tap into longstanding relationships with the media. The thing you can also fail in your PR plan if you are reckless. Don’t fall into these five PR traps, according to PR student Janet Pribanic.

Don’t pour all your resources on PR

Especially if you’re a small business or merely starting out, avoid overspending on PR just because it looks cool and it’s what everybody else is doing. Direct your PR efforts on important milestones, events, and strategy.

Don’t forget to send out a press release
Keep the media and your readers updates with your latest offerings, events, and company news through press releases. It will help you stay visible and relevant to your target market.

Don’t focus on just one PR channel

Allot your time, energy, and resources to news outlets, social media, and your website, to name a few. Cast a wide net but also learn to prioritize platforms that give you the best results, Janet Pribanic added.

Don’t stalk people

Journalists and reporters will naturally pay attention to your press releases or announcements if they are helpful to their audience. You don’t need to force it and bombard them with your messages and follow-ups.

Don’t lie

Honest and transparency make for good PR. Be a brand that can be trusted by staying true to who you are – at all times.

Top Japanese streetwear brands

Streetwear has boomed in recent years, propelled by the rise of social media and the emergence of a new crop of celebrities and influencers. Its success and acceptance also have a lot to do with the emergence of sneaker culture and the dominance of hip-hop in modern music. But nowhere is this more apparent than in the growth of street fashion in Japan, says fashion enthusiast Janet Pribanic. Hereunder are some of the most prominent Japanese brands who’ve made it big in the streetwear scene.

Undercover

Collaborations with the likes of Nike and Uniqlo has made Jun Takahashi’s brand Undercover one of the most recognized brands to come out of the Asian country. The label’s road to success began in the early 1990s and it has steadily established itself as one of the most sought-after, cutting-edge brands in Japan, combining the sophistication of high fashion with streetwear aesthetics.

COMME des GARÇONS

It’s easy to mistake this for a French brand because of its name, but Comme des GARÇONS is distinctly Japanese both in its commitment to preserving the Asian country’s fashion traditions while aspiring for a more high-fashion, deconstructed appeal. It’s the oldest brand on our list, having existed since the early 1970s. Its recent success in the streetwear scene is attributed to the rise of its ready-to-wear “Play” line.

A Bathing Ape

Simply put, Japanese streetwear would not reach its current reputation as one of the most collectible in the world without the success of Japanese designer Nigo’s A Bathing Ape, or Bape for short. Though Nigo has sold the rights to Bape to Hong Kong’s IT group, its relevance continues, the Asian equivalent of the U.S.’s Supreme. Some of the most sought-after Bape hoodies, shirts, caps, and collaboration items go for thousands of dollars today, adds Janet Pribanic.

Janet Pribanic is currently pursuing a Public Relations degree at the New York University. Fashion is among her various interests. More musings and insights on the streetwear scene here.

Giant monster movies: A guilty pleasure

I’m Janet Pribanic, and I watch an insane amount of films during my free time. Last year, I went through a phase – giant monster movies. It started when I caught this gem called “Little Shop of Horrors” on television one evening. After that, I started doing research on films that featured giant monsters. I thought it would be a fun ride.

I started with “Aliens” from James Cameron. It was a fast-paced, action-horror adventure that built upon the Ridley Scott classic. “Aliens” also had one of the most bad-ass heroines in all of cinema – Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley. The alien queen was also a sight to behold.

The most fun giant monster film I’ve seen though, is “Tremors” starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward. It’s about a few giant underground worms that started feasting on the residents of a sleepy town in the middle of nowhere.

Then there was “Deep Rising,” which is essentially like “Aliens” but instead of being eaten by an army of humanoid-reptilian hybrids, the humans here were annihilated by a single giant sea creature. Good times.

“Cloverfield” was entertaining, and I highly recommend it to those who still haven’t seen it. It’s a found-footage type of movie about a Godzilla-sized monster that decimates New York City.
Finally, I ended up with the granddaddy of all modern giant monster movies – “Jaws.” It holds up surprisingly well for a film that’s over 40 years old.

What’s your favorite giant monster movie? Tag me, Janet Pribanic, in the comments section below.

Why the Sixers should trade Markelle Fultz

Former top-pick Markelle Fultz has, in many NBA pundit’s eyes, lost his place in the so-called Sixers “process.” This is the dominant narrative now for the team that just recently acquired Jimmy Butler, setting up the rise of a new big three that includes stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Fultz, especially with all the weird issues he has with his shooting, injury, and approach to the game, is now seen as expendable.

There is nothing close to personal in this imminent decision for the Sixers. After all, Fultz has not been playing consistently since he was finally declared “healthy” to start the season. Now, the verdict is out that he is in fact suffering from what his agent named as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome or TOS, a condition that effectively impedes his normal movements and motions, making him awkwardly shoot the basketball.

If the Sixers manage to do away with Fultz’ contract, they stand a chance of having enough room for a maximum cap space come next season, making the team primed for acquiring a fourth superstar. Needless to say, this is going to be huge for the entire NBA. Just imagine if the Sixers’ maxed-out salary entices the likes of top forward Anthony Davis or a shooting guard like Klay Thompson?

In any case, every NBA enthusiast appears to be in favor of trading Fultz, whose game can’t seem to blend in with those of his fellow Sixers stars. It’s, of course, very unfortunate for the young 2017 top rookie, but his condition is something rehab should be able to address. From a business standpoint, and if Philly is committed to winning this year, it should go for a reliable veteran in exchange for Fultz, one who can be another outside shooting threat (aside from Redick) and create even better spacing for the team.

Hello, I’m Janet Pribanic, a Public Relations student at NYU into music, fashion, travel, literature, and sports. More NBA-related reads here.

Satisfying vegetable-packed soups

Vegetable soups are not only satisfying, but they are packed with many nutrients that are great for all members of the family. Vegetable soups can be served as appetizers and can be frozen and kept for the next meal. Here are two examples of hearty vegetable soups that you can easily make for your family.

Chunky vegetable and brown rice soup. Throw in 1 medium onion (sliced), 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced celery sticks, carrot chunks, 2 medium parsnips, and 1 tablespoon of thyme on a large non-stick pan with oil. Cover and cook for 15 minutes, stirring until onions begin to color. Add 100 grams of brown rice and pour 1.2 liters of water. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Season with black pepper and serve.

Spiced carrot and lentil soup. Dry fry 2 teaspoons of cumin seeds and a pinch of chili flakes in a large saucepan for 1 minute, taking out the half to set aside. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 600 grams of coarsely grated carrots, 140 grams of split red lentils, 1 hot vegetable stock, and 125 ml of milk to the pan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes until the lentils soften. Whizz the soup with a hand blender until smooth, season to your preference, and serve with a dollop of plain yogurt. Sprinkle with the toasted spices and serve with naan bread.

Work smarter in PR with these skills

The public relations industry is a hectic one. PR professionals are tasked to do a ton, and work-life balance seems too elusive. Hard skills are important and can be measured. However, to stay effective, soft skills should be learned, too.

Teamwork should be in your fiber. The public relations industry isn’t a vacuum wherein you only get to work with two people. Workdays could mean manning an event with a hundred volunteers and workers, or silent days in the office where you have to plan with a team. PR professionals have to be able to work with people from all walks of life, and do it effectively.

It goes without saying that a PR professional must have problem-solving skills. There will be times when the challenges you face can’t be addressed by a textbook answer. You’d need to have a few tricks up your sleeve to make things work when the first one doesn’t bite. Flexibility is quite an underrated skill in the industry. Everything in the industry has the potential to change, sometimes more often and faster than one expects. Having the ability to adapt to a situation with little time to adjust is a skill one should have.

Leadership skills are crucial in PR. Pulling off great presentations without the form of a leader would be impossible. Leaders are teachable, kind, and practice integrity in every task they handle. Most days, when you’re in the field for an event, people will look to you for instructions even for the simplest things. Being a leader isn’t simply a title; it should become your way of living.

Essential spices to have in your pantry

All cooking enthusiasts know that spices make the heart of any dish. Spices are responsible for the plethora of flavors that makes meals special, tasty, and satisfying. As a food lover, you will need staple spices in your spice rack that you can use for many kinds of dishes. Here are examples of essential cooking spices that you need to have.

Black peppercorns. A classic in all recipes, black peppercorns add just the right amount of gentle spice that will make the flavors pop. You can either grind peppercorns using a mill or a mortar and pestle.

Kosher salt. While there are many kinds of salt, Kosher salt provides a tasteful versatility with its neutral flavor. It is easy to cook with and its coarse flakes provide a visible presence when you sprinkle it on top of your dish.

Chili powder. While some people love spicy dishes, other are partial to heat. Chili powder allows you to control the spice level of the dishes you make. You can either incorporate the powder as you cook or serve it on the side. It has complex levels of heat and adds a wonderful depth of flavor.

Ground ginger. While fresh ginger provides a punchy, intense flavor, ground or powdered ginger allows you to control the zing and spice that you intend to have. You can also use it for baking cookies, cakes, spice rub recipes, tagines, and marinades.

Can the Knicks reach the postseason without Porzingis?

The New York Knicks are still trying to find a good, working combination in the first few weeks of the season, with new coach David Fizdale continuing to juggle the starting lineup. In a recent game against the Pelicans, Fizdale even started three of the team’s rookies in Kevin Knox, Allonzo Trier, and Mitchell Robinson.

The experiment of going small and young seemed to work until the fourth quarter when the team blew a huge lead and once again succumbed. The Knicks currently hold a 4-12 record which places them just three spots away from the bottom of the standings in the East. It doesn’t help their cause that there has been a resurgence of teams in the conference, with the Celtics, Bucks, Sixers, and Raptors becoming legit title contenders.

The team still doesn’t have a definite timeframe for the return of its injured superstar Kristaps Porzingis, who is recovering from an ACL tear. Though he seems to be recuperating nicely and starting to practice, the team is likely to lose a lot more games until his return. And perhaps by then, it will be too late for the team to even aspire for a playoff spot.

The bit of good news (and a sliver of hope) for the franchise is that Porzingis’ absence is helping develop the play of Knox and Emmanuel Mudiay, while Hardaway Jr. and Frank Ntilikina continue to plug away. But there’s a big hole in the team’s middle that Enes Kanter simply can’t fill. Unless a huge turnaround happens sometime soon, even a Porzingis return early next year won’t save this team.

Carbonara: Heaven for pasta lovers

Every pasta dish has its own personality. Italian-style spaghetti is fierce and flavorful. Lasagna is lazy but full of promise. Carbonara, when prepared well, is simply heavenly.

Carbonara is usually plays second choice to the typical tomato-based spaghetti, but it’s just as good. Here are some important steps to making your own carbonara.

First, gather your ingredients, which include ½ pound of linguine, 6 slices of bacon (preferably thick-cut and sliced into ¼-inch strips), 1 shallot (large and finely chopped), 2 eggs, 2 egg yolks (separate), ½ teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of ground pepper, 2/3 cup of Pecorino cheese (grated), 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and finally 2/3 cup of parsley (flat lead).

As a side note, the aforementioned ingredients are enough to prepare carbonara for six people.

Either fry or boil the linguine. Once it’s cooked, fry the bacon for five minutes in its own oil until brown and crispy. Transfer the bacon to another plate. You can use the bacon oil for more flavor when you add the shallot. Mix the shallot until it softens, which should take about two to three minutes.

Put the eggs, egg yolks, grated Pecorino, and salt and pepper in a bowl and whisk. Once it is well-mixed, drain the pasta, but keep a cup of water for cooking liquid. Put in the pasta, bacon, linguine, and oil the egg mix and toss.

The cooking liquid from the pasta will be used to keep the carbonara from drying. Parsley and cheese can be added if desired.

Developing millennial talent in the field of PR

Millennials in the workforce are salvaging their reputation. Our generation is shattering the misconceptions that we are entitled, lazy, and gadget-dependent. These days, many millennials from different fields are using their talents and influence in rallying others to support worthwhile causes. In the field of public relations, it's important to sharpen the millennial talent. Here are some ways industry leaders can do this:

Develop their confidence and communication skills

Contrary to the belief that millennials are entitled and rude, most of them are just actually overly-conscious of how they will be perceived by others. Even the extremely talented ones will second-guess themselves. It is important to reassure them of what they can do, but it's also necessary to help them learn how to ask and get what they want. In PR, you need to learn how to convince people. You need to get their approval. If you're sharing a good thing, they have to understand why it's so good. They also need to learn how to speak with authority figures and industry juniors.

Empower them to become industry leaders

In this age of live streaming and personal broadcasts, millennials who are working in PR must step up their game. To do this, their mentors should train them to become leaders that people in the industry can trust. These days, young PR people can write, design, shoot, and market their own projects. However, they need the right strategies to get the attention they or the company they represent deserves. Aside from building up their knowledge, they also need to hone their social and communication skills to become a figure people will trust.

Millennials still have a few years before the next generation takes over. While they're still at their peak, they have to make the most out of the opportunities made available to them.

PR talk: Do you have what it takes?

For every profession, there are sets of skills that one has to possess in order to perform the job well. Communication skills are needed for every line of work, while it may not always be the priority set for one to have. However, in the world of public relations, one would be doomed without it.

Future public relations practitioners must embrace effective communication and interpersonal skills, as this is the bloodline of their careers. Individuals who would like to pursue a career in the world of public relations must know that they must have a pleasing character, one that would easily engage people into communicating with them.

You’d know you’re cut out for the job when you’re excited to meet with new people. You’re ready to take on new challenges, and being where the action is gets you pumped. Future public relations practitioners must earn a well-rounded education, as their intellectual prowess allows them to talk about a wide variety of topics with people from all walks of life. This is a great asset that your future employer will look for, as this shows management potential.

Taking pride in writing and finding it as a mode of expression that’s empowering and fulfilling is a trait every PR practitioner holds. Team players and strategic thinkers have a place in the industry; they know the importance of working together in order to achieve big goals. Social media savvy individuals are welcome, too, yet they must have a sense of how it is to take communication on a personal level.

The Weepies is one the best indie bands you haven’t heard of

Formed in the early 2000s, folk-pop duo The Weepies has already produced five studio albums, beginning with Happiness in 2003 and the latest being "Sirens" in 2015. While there’s no news of any new album coming out soon—and though you’ve probably never heard of them—the band has already made a huge impact in an erstwhile hip-hop dominated music scene.

The Weepies are made up of married couple Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. Both are singer-songwriters, and the resulting Weepies sound is a combination of poignant lyricism and infectious melodies.

The band’s rise to popularity in the indie circuits came with the release of their 2006 sophomore outing "Say I am You," which featured favorites like “Not Your Year,” “Gotta Have You,” and the endearing wedding song “Painting by Chagall.” This was followed by 2008’s "Hideaway." which included the bittersweet title track, “All Good Things,” and “Antarctica.”

Weepies songs are touched by poetry, epitomized in chant-like verses “Breathe through it/write a list of desires/ … make a wish, slash some tires/paint a heart repeating, beating, don't give up, don't give up, don't give up" (Not Your Year) and “We live so high above the ground/satellites surround us” (Painting by Chagall), which not only pays homage to Chagall’s art but offers a refreshing take on the many thrills of love.

Or how about counterpoint lines like “Antarctica/my only living relative” and “I wish you/all good things/come to an end,” which tug at the heart yet deftly captures the practicality of needed leaving. The Weepies’ brand of pop will indeed make you smile, yet make you shed a little tear, too.

The Craze About ‘Crazy Rich Asians’

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ will hit the theaters this summer!  The film is an adaptation of the first book of author Kevin Kwan’s book series.  The novel is loved by many, and the Hollywood film will star an all-Asian cast—the first one in 25 years. Jon M. Chu directed the romantic dramedy.

The story is about Rachel Chu, an NYU economics professor whose boyfriend is Nick Young, a secret multimillionaire.  Rachel finds out about Nick’s wealthy family when he brings her to Singapore for a family event.

‘Fresh Off the Boat’ star Constance Wu will play the role of Rachel Chu, and Nick Young will be played by Henry Golding.  The film also boasts of talents like Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Harry Shum Jr., and even Ken Jeong.

What makes this film special is Kevin Kwan’s active presence through the whole film production.  He was there during the casting and even in Singapore.  He made sure his novel was brought to life like how he pictured it, and Jon M. Chu did not seem to disappoint.  Watching the trailers alone, it seems the film lives up to its title— posh, luxurious, and crazy.

Important Media And Pr Trends For 2018

What’s ahead for the public relations profession as a whole amid a world of disruption remains to be seen, but here’s a quick look at the big picture and the major trends that shape it this 2018.

Perhaps the theme unifying all PR and media trends this year is acceleration, where the world moves faster than ever and disruption strikes in all industries in just a matter of weeks to months. Mobile and cloud technologies, machine learning, and advanced robotics are just some things changing the pace of work and inevitably affecting gatekeeping and movements in the PR industry.

There’s also media fragmentation and loss of fidelity in traditional national media “experts.” Major media have been grappling with numerous blows on social media, and the biggest challenge and opportunity for PR is to ensure its own credibility.

At the same time, PR is dealing with the rise of digital or social media marketing, and has to keep establishing its position to bring about strong press for companies to get their story told to the public. The difference between SEO and PR, too, continues to blur as more practitioners of the former realize the need for storytelling while the latter quantify their work in terms of SEO. The trend is only seen to speed up as search engines become smarter.

Another trend is AI-powered personalization of advertising. As artificial intelligence improves, reaching people at unprecedented scales is possible, and PR practitioners need to adapt their strategies to ensure and maximize success. The most advanced ones are expected to embrace AI technology and incorporate them into daily work to avoid obsolescence.

Janet Pribanic is a college student currently attending New York University and is on her way to a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations. She loves the fast-paced nature of PR and is excited to be part of high-powered PR firms and nonprofits. Learn more on this page.
