PR talk: Do you have what it takes?

For every profession, there are sets of skills that one has to possess in order to perform the job well. Communication skills are needed for every line of work, while it may not always be the priority set for one to have. However, in the world of public relations, one would be doomed without it.

Future public relations practitioners must embrace effective communication and interpersonal skills, as this is the bloodline of their careers. Individuals who would like to pursue a career in the world of public relations must know that they must have a pleasing character, one that would easily engage people into communicating with them.

You’d know you’re cut out for the job when you’re excited to meet with new people. You’re ready to take on new challenges, and being where the action is gets you pumped. Future public relations practitioners must earn a well-rounded education, as their intellectual prowess allows them to talk about a wide variety of topics with people from all walks of life. This is a great asset that your future employer will look for, as this shows management potential.

Taking pride in writing and finding it as a mode of expression that’s empowering and fulfilling is a trait every PR practitioner holds. Team players and strategic thinkers have a place in the industry; they know the importance of working together in order to achieve big goals. Social media savvy individuals are welcome, too, yet they must have a sense of how it is to take communication on a personal level.

The Weepies is one the best indie bands you haven’t heard of

Formed in the early 2000s, folk-pop duo The Weepies has already produced five studio albums, beginning with Happiness in 2003 and the latest being "Sirens" in 2015. While there’s no news of any new album coming out soon—and though you’ve probably never heard of them—the band has already made a huge impact in an erstwhile hip-hop dominated music scene.

The Weepies are made up of married couple Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. Both are singer-songwriters, and the resulting Weepies sound is a combination of poignant lyricism and infectious melodies.

The band’s rise to popularity in the indie circuits came with the release of their 2006 sophomore outing "Say I am You," which featured favorites like “Not Your Year,” “Gotta Have You,” and the endearing wedding song “Painting by Chagall.” This was followed by 2008’s "Hideaway." which included the bittersweet title track, “All Good Things,” and “Antarctica.”

Weepies songs are touched by poetry, epitomized in chant-like verses “Breathe through it/write a list of desires/ … make a wish, slash some tires/paint a heart repeating, beating, don't give up, don't give up, don't give up" (Not Your Year) and “We live so high above the ground/satellites surround us” (Painting by Chagall), which not only pays homage to Chagall’s art but offers a refreshing take on the many thrills of love.

Or how about counterpoint lines like “Antarctica/my only living relative” and “I wish you/all good things/come to an end,” which tug at the heart yet deftly captures the practicality of needed leaving. The Weepies’ brand of pop will indeed make you smile, yet make you shed a little tear, too.
